How long do Thanksgiving leftovers keep?
The numbers come from the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, and they are short: cooked turkey and the dishes around it keep 3 to 4 days in the refrigerator and 3 to 4 months in the freezer (fsis.usda.gov, “Leftovers and Food Safety”, checked 1 October 2026). Two more rules from the same source decide whether those numbers even start:
- The 2-hour rule. Everything goes into the fridge within 2 hours of cooking — the turkey included (fsis.usda.gov, “Turkey Basics: Handling Cooked Dinners”, checked 1 October 2026).
- When in doubt, throw it out. A label tells you the date; it cannot smell, taste or judge the food for you. If something looks or smells off before its date, it goes.
The label maker turns those numbers into a finished date on every label:
| Storage | USDA window | The label prints |
|---|---|---|
| Fridge, safer end | 3 to 4 days | use by cooked + 3 days |
| Fridge, outer limit | 3 to 4 days | use by cooked + 4 days |
| Freezer, safer end | 3 to 4 months | best by cooked + 3 months |
| Freezer, outer limit | 3 to 4 months | best by cooked + 4 months |
The fridge default takes the safer 3-day end; switch to 4 if you like. Frozen food stays safe indefinitely at a steady −18 °C — the 3-to-4-month window is about quality, which is why those labels read “best by” and not “use by”.
How does the label maker work?
- Type the dishes, one per line — turkey, turkey gravy, Aunt Vera’s pumpkin pie. An optional from line (“From the Novak kitchen”) prints small on every label.
- Check the cooked-on date. It defaults to today; set it back if you cooked earlier, and the use-by date follows.
- Print at 100 per cent, cut along the solid borders, tape a label on each container. No folding, no gluing.
Everything is computed and drawn on your device. Nothing is uploaded, there is no account, and the PDF carries no watermark.
What size are the labels?
| Preset | Size | Per A4 / Letter sheet | Fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Container strip | 70 × 37 mm | 12 | take-out boxes, deli containers, storage dish sides |
| Pan-lid label | 84 × 56 mm | 8 | lids of 7-inch and 9-inch round foil pans |
Both are true sizes when you print at 100 per cent — “actual size” in the print dialog, never “fit to page”. The pan-lid size is the one the long-standing printable sets use for foil pans (they name the 7-inch and 9-inch fit; checked 1 October 2026), and it carries a small pumpkin line drawing. A mono printer loses nothing: black line art on white.
Sending guests home with leftovers
The after-dinner job is its own five minutes: containers on the counter, who wanted what, and every bag leaving without a label until someone finds gravy in their freezer in March. Type the dish list once while packing, and each container goes home with the dish, your from line and honest dates on it.
It is also the quiet end of the Thanksgiving table job this site started: the place card maker types the seating, the Thanksgiving printables hub collects the rest of the day, and the place cards guide walks the whole table from seating to send-off. Leftover labels work for any cooked meal, not only Thanksgiving — potlucks, bake sales, a Sunday pot of chili — the dates are computed either way.
What this tool does not do
It does not judge whether food is still safe — a printed date cannot smell anything, and the USDA’s own advice is to throw food out when in doubt. It does not print stickers: these are paper labels you tape on, which keeps them printable on any printer. And it does not need your email address; the download starts the moment you click.
Questions
How long do Thanksgiving leftovers keep?
The USDA's food safety service says cooked meat and poultry leftovers keep 3 to 4 days in the refrigerator and 3 to 4 months in the freezer (fsis.usda.gov, “Leftovers and Food Safety”, checked 1 October 2026). The label maker prints the worked-out date on every label: cooked on Thanksgiving Thursday, the fridge label reads use by the Sunday or Monday after. Freeze anything that will not be eaten by then.
How do I make the labels?
Type one dish per line — turkey, gravy, Aunt Vera's pie. Add an optional from line that prints on every label, check the cooked-on date (it defaults to today), pick the fridge or freezer rule, and download the PDF. Every label comes out finished: dish, dates, all printed. No handwriting, no email address, no watermark.
What size are the labels?
Two true-size presets, both flat cut-outs with no folding. The container strip is 70 × 37 mm and prints 12 per sheet — it fits a take-out box, a deli container or the side of a storage dish. The pan-lid label is 84 × 56 mm and prints 8 per sheet; it sits well inside the lids of both 7-inch and 9-inch round foil pans. Print at 100 per cent, not fit-to-page, or the sizes shrink.
When do leftovers need to go into the fridge?
Within 2 hours of cooking — that is the USDA's rule for cooked dinners, including the whole turkey (fsis.usda.gov, “Turkey Basics: Handling Cooked Dinners”, checked 1 October 2026). Set the cooked-on date to the day you actually cooked, not the day you are labeling, so the use-by date stays true.
Do the labels survive the fridge and freezer?
Printed paper does, with one honest caveat: a damp container or a frosted freezer can smudge inkjet ink. Tape the label on first, then run a strip of clear tape over it, and it stays readable for months. The labels print fine in black and white.
Is anything uploaded from this page?
No. Your dish list, the dates and the PDF are all built inside your browser, and no request carries anything you typed. Closing the tab erases everything.
