What the tool actually does
Three measured corrections, in order.
It rebalances the color. The tool reads how dark the darkest points of your photo are in red, in green and in blue — separately. In a healthy photo those three match; in a 1975 print they are far apart, which is the orange shift. Sliding each color back to its proper range is what removes the cast.
It puts the black back. A faded print has no true black — shadows sit at a muddy brownish gray. Once the three colors are balanced, the darkest points return to real black, and the whole picture gains the depth it lost.
It revives the color. Faded prints are timid in tone. A gentle, adjustable saturation lift brings skin, grass and sky back toward what they were, without inventing anything that is not in the photo.
Scanning tips for the best result
Photograph or scan the print flat and evenly lit — daylight from a window works well, flash does not. Include the full image and avoid heavy shadows across the photo. If you have several photos to fix, revive each one here, then collect them into a single file with the images to PDF tool.
A revived family photo is also the perfect first step for a gift: frame the print, or turn it into a coloring page for the grandchildren and let them color grandma’s wedding themselves. If the gift has a date — Christmas above all — the Christmas hub’s fix-then-gift section keeps the order: fix first, gift second.
When the faded picture is still on film rather than paper, the film comes first: the guide What do you do with a box of old photo negatives? walks the whole journey from the orange strip to the finished photo, and this restorer is one of its steps.
Why no upload matters for family photos
Old family photos are often the only copy that exists, and many are of people who are no longer here. Handing them to a random restoration site means trusting an unknown operator with exactly that. Every step of this tool — measuring, correcting, creating the download — happens in the page you have open, and closing the tab erases everything. The result carries no watermark and no account is asked for, because nothing needs to be paid back.
Questions
Does this colorize black-and-white photos?
No — and it will not pretend to. Adding color to a black-and-white photo means inventing it, which takes an AI service and your photo on their server. What this tool does is measured correction of color that already exists. A yellowed black-and-white scan does come out as a clean, neutral black-and-white — that is the cast leaving, not color arriving.
Can it repair scratches, tears or missing corners?
Not here — this tool fixes color and contrast, the two things that fade in every old print and the two things that can be measured and corrected rather than guessed. Scratches, dust and creases have their own tool, the old photo scratch remover, which fills damage from the surrounding picture. Missing corners and torn-away pieces still need a restorer or an AI service; be aware that those ask you to upload the photo.
Why do old photos turn orange or pink?
Color prints use three dye layers, and they age at different speeds — the cyan layer usually fades fastest. Losing cyan shifts the whole picture toward red and orange, and the black areas turn muddy brown because there is not enough of all three colors left to make black. That is why faded prints look washed out: less range, wrong balance.
Is one click enough, or do I need settings?
One click is enough — upload the photo and the correction is applied at full strength. If a photo looks over-done, pull the Strength slider back. The Color boost slider adds back some of the punch faded prints lose, and you can compare with the Before/After slider before downloading.
What does the scan quality do to the result?
The tool can only work with the color in your scan or phone photo of the print. Photograph the print evenly lit, without flash, and include the whole image area. A very dark phone photo of a print limits how much color comes back.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. The correction is computed in your browser and the download is created there too. Nothing is sent to a server, there is no watermark on the result, no daily limit, and no account is needed.
What happens with a very large scan?
The restoration works on a long side of up to 2400 pixels, whatever size the photo was — enough for a sharp print about 20 cm wide. Both the preview and the download use that size. If your photo is bigger, it is made smaller first; nothing is uploaded either way.
