From typed word to strung banner
The generator gives every letter its own panel and puts pattern panels — flowers, stars, diamonds or hearts — at both ends and between words, the way strung banners alternate letters with punched decoration. The letters and motifs are drawn as white shapes on coloured panels, which is what makes them read as cut-outs on the print: the white parts are simply not printed, so the paper shows through the colour exactly where a hole would be.
The stats line under the preview does the arithmetic of the craft before you commit paper: how many panels the word produces, how many sheets that fills, and roughly how long the finished banner will be once strung with a little spacing between panels. A twelve-panel banner at 130 mm per panel comes out near one metre and three quarters — a wide doorway or a garage, not a street.
Printing it well
The PDF arranges two panels per sheet, at exact size, with a dashed line around each piece and a solid line across the top where the fold goes. Print at 100 percent — “actual size”, not “fit to page” — or the panels shrink. Any home printer manages plain paper at this coverage; the ink-saver mode exists because a full-bleed colour banner across six sheets is a lot of ink, and outlines only cost almost nothing. The whole walkthrough — print settings, cutting, folding and hanging the finished string — is the guide How to make papel picado banners.
For a classroom or a group, ink saver plus a packet of felt-tip pens turns the same PDF into the colouring-in step before the cutting. The photo to coloring page tool is the same idea for photographs, if the party activity wants pictures of people instead.
Do you need a printable template or a generator?
A template prints a fixed design; a generator prints your word. If the banner only has to say FIESTA, a free template PDF does the job — that is what nearly every printable papel picado result was when we checked, on 4 October 2026: static designs, a membership shop, a paid marketplace pack. If the banner has to say a name — MARIANA, DÍA DE MUERTOS — no template carries those letters, and a generator is the tool that types them for you: one panel per letter, at exact print size, with the sheet count worked out before you print.

Where the banners hang
Papel picado appears wherever a string can be tied: birthday parties, weddings, quinceañeras, classroom walls during Hispanic Heritage Month from 15 September to 15 October, and ofrendas and doorways for Día de los Muertos on 1 and 2 November. The tool does not decide the occasion — it just makes the lettering. Why the fragile cut paper belongs to those two days is told on the Día de los Muertos hub: it is read as a reminder of how fleeting life is. For the autumn weeks, the pumpkin stencil generator covers the other half of the decorating: a photo turned into a carving pattern for the porch.
Questions
What is papel picado?
Cut-paper banners strung across streets, patios and doorways for celebrations in Mexico — fiestas, birthdays, weddings, and Día de los Muertos at the start of November. Traditional panels are punched out of tissue paper by hand, dozens to a sheet, and hung on one long string. The banners sold for Day of the Dead decorate markets weeks before the date.
Can I customise the banner with my own word?
Yes — typing your own word or name is the whole customisation — one letter per panel, up to 18 characters, accented letters like Í and Ñ included. There is no template to edit and no Canva or Cricut account; the banner you print is the word you typed, drawn and assembled in your browser.
How do I turn the sheets into a banner?
Print at 100 percent scale, cut along the dashed lines, then lay a piece of string or twine along the top of each panel and fold the top edge over it. A small piece of tape on the back of each fold holds the panel on the string. Two panels fit on one sheet, so a ten-letter word with its pattern panels is about six sheets.
What paper should I use?
Plain printer paper behaves best — it feeds reliably and holds a crease. Heavier paper lasts longer outdoors but is harder to fold over the string. Tissue paper, the traditional material, is too flimsy for most home printers.
Which colours should I pick?
The Fiesta palette is the bright mixed look of a street party. The Día de Muertos palette leans on marigold orange, magenta and purple, the colours that dominate Day of the Dead decorations. Pastel suits baby showers and young children's parties. Ink saver prints outlines only, in black on white, for classrooms and cheap printing — and it doubles as a colouring-in sheet.
Is it okay to use this for a party?
Papel picado is a folk decoration, not a symbol with rules of its own, and printed versions are a common classroom and party craft. If you want the real thing, artisans still cut tissue panels by hand and their work lasts for years; this tool is the print-at-home version of the look, for the day you need a banner this afternoon.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. The panels are drawn and the PDF assembled entirely in your browser. No account, no watermark, and no request carries what you typed.
